Make His Paths Straight: Repentance, Baptism, and the Preparation for the Lord in Luke 3

By David Whitaker

Roughing out a piece of wood is not the final step but it is the most important one. You take the rough timber and cut away everything that does not belong. The shape starts to appear. You cannot do the fine work until the rough work is done.

Luke 3 is about roughing out. John the Baptist comes to prepare the way of the Lord by calling people to repentance. He is not the finished product. He is the one who makes the path straight.

What Did John the Baptist Mean by Fruits Worthy of Repentance

John appears in the wilderness preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. He quotes Isaiah about the voice crying in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord and make his paths straight. Every valley will be filled and every mountain and hill brought low and the crooked will be made straight.

He tells the crowds that they must bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. He warns them not to rely on being children of Abraham because God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

The people ask what they should do. John gives specific answers. If you have two coats give one to someone who has none. Tax collectors should collect no more than what is appointed. Soldiers should do violence to no man and be content with their wages.

I think about how practical John was. He did not ask them to leave their jobs or become monks. He asked them to do their work honestly and share what they had. The fruits of repentance are visible actions.

And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

Luke 3:10

Why Was Jesus Baptized If He Had No Sin

Jesus comes to John to be baptized. John hesitates because he recognizes who Jesus is but Jesus insists. He is baptized and as he prays the heaven opens and the Holy Ghost descends in a bodily shape like a dove upon him. A voice comes from heaven saying you are my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus did not need repentance because he had no sin. But baptism was not just for repentance. It was the ordinance that marked the beginning of his public ministry and showed his submission to the Fathers will.

The Father voice and the Holy Ghost descending are the divine confirmation. The Son is approved before the work begins.

This connects to an earlier reflection about the hidden grain and the annunciation in Luke 1. That chapter announced who Jesus would be. This chapter confirms who he is.

Significance of Jesus Genealogy in Luke 3 vs Matthew 1

The chapter ends with a genealogy tracing Jesus lineage through seventy-seven names back to Adam and then to God. Matthew genealogy goes forward from Abraham to Jesus. Luke goes backward from Jesus to Adam.

The difference matters. Matthew emphasizes Jesus as the son of David and the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy. Luke emphasizes Jesus as the son of Adam and the Savior of all humanity. By ending with Adam who was the son of God Luke connects Jesus to the entire human family.

I think about what it means that the genealogy ends with God. Adam was a son of God by creation and Jesus is the Son of God by nature. The line connects them.

How to Prepare the Way of the Lord in My Own Life

John message was to prepare. Fill the valleys of despair and level the mountains of pride. Make the crooked places straight. These are not metaphors for someone else. They are instructions for me.

The fruits of repentance are still coats shared and honest work and fair dealing. The preparation is the same in every generation.

Closing

The rough timber in my shop does not look like much when I start. But the cuts I make in the roughing stage determine everything that follows.

John the Baptist was the roughing stage for the gospel. He cleared the path and made the way straight so that when Jesus came the people would be ready. The fruits of repentance are the chips that fall when the rough edges are cut away.
