The Manger and the Temple: Birth, Witness, and the Fathers Business in Luke 2

By David Whitaker

I have a piece of rough-hewn oak in my shop that has never been planed. It is functional and strong but it will never sit in a showroom. It is the kind of wood you find in a barn or a stable. But it holds weight. That is what matters.

Luke 2 begins with the Son of God lying in a manger. A feeding trough. Rough-hewn wood holding the creator of the universe. The chapter moves from the manger to the temple and from the shepherds to Simeon and Anna. It shows that the Savior was recognized not by the powerful but by the watchful.

Meaning of the Manger in Luke 2

Caesar Augustus issues a decree that sends Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem for a census. The town is crowded and there is no room in the inn. Mary wraps Jesus in swaddling clothes and lays him in a manger.

The manger is not incidental. It is the sign the angel gives to the shepherds. You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. The Savior of the world is identified by his placement in a feeding trough.

I think about why the manger matters. It shows that God does not enter the world the way the world expects. He does not come to a palace or a temple. He comes to a place where animals eat. The humility is the point.

And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:7

Why Were the Shepherds Told About Jesus First

The angel appears to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night. The glory of the Lord shines around them and they are terrified. The angel tells them not to be afraid and announces good tidings of great joy. A multitude of the heavenly host appears praising God.

The shepherds were not the religious elite. They were not priests or scribes or Pharisees. They were working people considered unclean by the standards of the temple. But they are the first to hear the news.

They go to Bethlehem and find Mary and Joseph and the baby. They tell everyone what they have seen and heard. Mary keeps all these things and ponders them in her heart.

I think about the pattern. The people who were waiting and watching were the ones who saw. The shepherds were awake and the angels came.

How Did Simeon and Anna Recognize Jesus

Joseph and Mary bring Jesus to the temple to present him to the Lord according to the law of Moses. They offer a pair of turtledoves which is the offering of the poor.

Simeon is a just and devout man waiting for the consolation of Israel. The Holy Ghost is upon him and he has been promised that he will not see death before he has seen the Lords Christ. He comes into the temple by the Spirit and takes Jesus in his arms. He blesses God and says he can now depart in peace.

Anna is a prophetess who has been a widow for many years and serves God with fastings and prayers night and day. She gives thanks and speaks of Jesus to all who look for redemption in Jerusalem.

Simeon and Anna were not looking for a political king. They were looking for the redemption of Israel and they recognized the baby because they had been preparing their whole lives.

This connects to an earlier reflection about awake awake and putting on strength in 2 Nephi 8. The call to awake is answered by Simeon and Anna who had been watching their whole lives.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Was About His Fathers Business

The chapter ends with Jesus at twelve years old staying behind in Jerusalem after the feast. Joseph and Mary travel a days journey before realizing he is not with them. They return to find him in the temple sitting among the teachers listening and asking questions.

Mary asks why he has treated them this way. Jesus says something that must have been both confusing and clarifying. Wist ye not that I must be about my Fathers business?

He goes back to Nazareth and is subject to them. Mary keeps all these things in her heart. Jesus increases in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.

The balance in verse 52 is worth noting. He grew in wisdom mentally and stature physically and in favor with God spiritually and with man socially. Four dimensions of growth. Each one necessary.

Closing

The rough-hewn oak in my shop will never be polished but it holds weight. The manger held the weight of the world. The shepherds saw what the priests missed because they were watching.
